Pukpuk Publications is the arm of the Crocodile Prize Competition, Papua New Guinea’s annual literary competition. We publish the annual Crocodile Prize Anthology. We also publish books by Papua New Guineans
and others writing about PNG.
We are not a conventional publisher and operate on a non-profit basis using the online publishing, printing and distribution service of Amazon Books called Createspace.
Under the service we can publish books without cost and distribute them for retail sale on the Amazon website. We can also buy copies of the books at a wholesale price for direct sale by authors.
It is a fairly easy system to use and you can do it yourself. However if you feel uncomfortable with the process we can do it for you. If that happens we will retain the royalties from the first 150 retail sales on the Amazon website, which are very minimal, to put back into our operating costs.
We can also order wholesale copies of the books for you, as the author, so you can sell them yourself and make a profit on the sales. This is what most authors do and, depending upon how many you sell, it will provide you with some return on your hard work.
Our priority, apart from the anthology, is to publish first-time authors. For these authors we are happy to carry out editing and formatting free of charge. For subsequent publications we charge authors a K250 fee. This fee is used to cover our first-authors publishing program.
Probably the best thing for you to do is check out the Createspace website and then get back to us on what you decide. There are a few PNG authors publishing their own books using Createspace and they seem to be doing well.
